Cookies at the Dark Side

I have to admit, I am a Star Wars nerd. Now that I admitted it, I have something else to admit... I'm proud of this fact!

I was a late bloomer to the Star Wars phenomenon. I remember going to theater to see Return of the Jedi when I was around 6 and honestly, I remember the experience more than the movie. I was with all my cousins, which was rare because we all lived in different parts of California and Grammy was taking us. She actually sat in the theater with the bunch of us between ages 6-8. I know she was bored because this is in no way her kind of movie, but she was with her grandkids so she was content. Back to my point, I was 6 and it was a movie about boy stuff. Needless to say, I was not a fan yet. It wasn't until the re-release of them in the theaters in the 90's that I became the crazy true fan I am today. I was a young adult and now able to watch and understand the amazingness of Star Wars.

So...
The other day I had a customer request our wonderland print (one of my favorite prints in the shop) and with the convo she asked if I could make this print.

It seemed she saw something like it on pinterest and could not find it for sell. I have been wanting to add Star Wars 'ism Prints to my shop for some time now but haven't gotten around to doing it. When she had the request, it was my chance to be creative. More to come now that the flood gates are open!!!

back to school time

I love back to school time, even thought I have no kids and am not in school heehee. However, I love when the stores are full of all the wonderful supplies that bring me back to my childhood. I can't help myself, I am compelled to stock up on all the wonderful classic items I got back when I was a little girl. I spent so much time organizing my desk and usually at story time, which I always got in trouble for. So, to celebrate the wonderful thing of school and the joy (for me) of summer being almost over and fall on our doorsteps I have put together a fun school supply list for you to browse. Enjoy!

I also want to send a shout our to my my nephew T.J. who starts his first day of high school at my old stomping grounds. He will carry on the Mustang tradition, black and silver rocks!

My intention was to get this posted on my birthday which was last thursday. However, my birthday plans were changed last minute due to unforeseen circumstances and I ended up losing a whole day of work, the day I had set aside to create this post. My special day was planned a month in advance to visit my old stomping grounds in Los Angeles but that plan fell through with short notice and a trip to Disneyland was created in replacement with an additional two days added to the original plan. I had to act quickly making sure to get the time sensitive orders completed first. Needless to say, the giveaway took a back seat to my customers. So because of the change in plans, while at Disneyland I decided I wanted to give one of you part of the present.

I ended up having a fantastic birthday, wish I was born in the winter because the park was hot and crowded but Nickolas and I planned well so we had a flawless experience... we go so often, we have learned how to navigate the park perfectly.

I have been working on this blog all day! Was worth it... how does it look, do you like?

I have to admit, I am not great when it comes to posting. I tend to focus on new products and customer orders and simply don't have time to find things to share that inspire me. I usually feel that since I have nothing to say, maybe I it's best that I share nothing at all because there is nothing worse than an uninspired post, right?

Here's my idea... I thought I could start sharing my projects, you know all those fantastic custom orders I work on. I take a picture of every piece so why not share it with those that might be interested. So as I finish up some orders, in the meantime here a clip from what I was watching this evening, Summer Magic. Don't you just love Burl Ives?!!!

Made an envelope for this order then added my favorite, decorative masking tape.

I must say I am a little obsessed with it. It's pretty and convenient.

A wonderful customer purchased our drink me tags

so I cut and folded up a simple little envelope and embellished

with the tape and a sticker I made along with a little clay heart I also made.

The package gets it's signature twine with a tucker reece tag

and I always include a couple of blank tags as a thank you.

I wanted something a little different for the closure of the envelope...

I have been making some adjustment plans to my shop based on what I love doing most. I just recently added the Seven Little Eggs (photo above) as well as took new photos for most of my items. I'm also looking into creating and adding both supplies as well as jewelry to the shop soon. The supply idea came from my passion of stationary and paper products. I have always been obsessed with it and I love making details from tags to stickers. Then, the jewelry idea was accidental. It came from my need to create what I want to wear and can't seem to find exactly my style out there. In my process of finding pieces for myself to wear, I found that these pieces only seemed to come in sets so I figured I could make one for me and one for you.

Stay tuned to see all the great things I am going to create soon... Can't wait to share! I am wrapping up all my current letter projects in the next couple of weeks and will not be offering custom order anymore. I found it to be too overwhelming and stressful which is not the path I want to be taking for something that is my true love. I hope what I do create will be things with more passion to pass onto all of you and hopefully you will like or love what I create.

Please take this journey with me as I embark on new and old interests that will if only just inspire you.

The black matte with a gloss french tip is my favorite,

but I love a beautiful white too.

Window Shopping ~ Anthropologie

Anthropologie is probably my favorite store, not so much because of the merchandise (which I love!) but because they are a true visual merchandising store. In an industry and time where so many retail companies are down sizing the visual positions and departments within the company, Athropologie instead sees the importance of it in each individual store.

Being a graduate of FIDM, I majored in Visual Communications at a time when the importance of visual was being stripped away to cushion the bottom line, a very "corporate" thing to do. I missed out on a time where visual was all about presentation, now it's about bulk. A Visual position is replaced with visual directives that any employee can follow, not very creative in my opinion and you are left with cookie-cutter shopping experiences. You go to one Gap, you've been to all for example.

Anthro on the other hand likes to let each store to represent the neighborhood it's in, so ever one you walk into is a little bit difference of an a experience. I have my favorites, but I am always excited to experience now Anthopologie's!

new mouse pad. I spend so much time on my computer so

I wanted my mouse pad to be something I enjoyed looking at,

not just something had to use. I am definitely a

function follows form girl 

but it still needs to be work well so what's better than turning a

practical and necessary object into a work of art. I went with

on Etsy which was a easy a great experience, I was sent their

template and it was printed perfectly.

Home Tour - Halloween Time

It's that time of year, my favorite time of year. I know, I know... most people love Christmas, I do too but for some reason I love Halloween more. I love decorating for it most and a little bit more than Christmas decor. I love the pumpkins, and skulls and black and white, and all that great creative 'scary' fun items. So here is my own home and all the great stuff I have collected or created through the years.

Farley the Fiddler

This is Farley the Fiddler, one of the long time performers at Disneyland.

Nick and I are regular watchers of Day at Disney. It's a 45min. video... yes, VHS.

They don't make it on DVD so we keep a VCR just so we can watch this video.

It was made back in 1993 and they have yet to duplicated this amazing video.

You can find it on youtube here in 4 parts, it's a great watch for you true Disneyland fans.

So back to Farley...

On Thursday we were walking through Frontierland when Nick turned to me and said "I think that's the same guy from Day at Disney" so I decided we needed to ask him,

and as soon as Nick asked he started playing the song he played in the video

"Turkey in the Straw"

This was Nicks reaction when he started playing... it was awesome!

We helped him sing the song (not that he needed it) and then after, like he was a rockstar, we took a picture with him.

We go to Disneyland at least once a month so this was a wonderful surprise for us...

we both agreed it was better then World of Color, which was the reason we went this trip.

I have been working so much this week on all the orders I have. Weird thing is I don't have as much as normal but I have added my own stuff in to the mix, like Halloween... and also I have been trying to get great images of my prints and giclees for you and I am very anxious to get them into the shop. Unfortunately, besides the wonderful help with shipping my beautiful mom provides me I am a solo worker. I only have so much time and my first priority is always my customer. I have Sarah and Anjali in the final stages and have been also working on some 6 inch love letter sets along with the normal 3 inh little love letter set. I also have Christmas on my brain, trying to decide what I want to make for the season. I have some fun concepts in mind.

Wednesday, I spend the day in Los Angeles. I am definitely a LA girl and love the inspiration I get when I go there. We started in Santa Monica then stopped in at the Beverly Hills Sprinkles where I was inspired to create a cupcake stand... how does that sound? I also got to take in two Anthropologies (my favorite store) Sorry I didn't take more photos, I was just absorbing the experience, but here are a couple of lovely Santa Monica...

Yesterday was a much more productive day for me after that annoying little allergy fest I encountered on Monday. I was able to make large dents on all of my current projects, yay. Sarah and Anjali's letters are made and ready for design, SOURCE is getting it's protective clear coats and all my wedding letter orders are made and just waiting for paint. I am back on track! Plus this afternoon, when Nick leaves for his weekly game with friends, I will take photos of all the wonderful prints I have, my room is the only room in the house with a white blank wall. Another big day of being productive! Last night, just before bedtime, I had a surge of creative energy and inspiration so stay turned for some new prints and tags in the weeks to come.

And... my biggest goal yet. HALLOWEEN! I have lots in the works, for example 'boo' letters, spooky banners, and scary prints. Along with an owl and pumpkin accent decor. This is my favorite holiday and I have been planning some great items to place in the shop this fall season.

Productive Tuesday...

Last week I received a surprising Etsy convo from Roseanne of Weddingbells Magazine who informed me they wanted to include my little love letters in an upcoming shoot for their inspiration page of their Spring + Summer 2011 issue slated to hit stands in December. Huh? What... you... um, what?... excitement set in and then panic! See, the thing was she needed them by this friday and she is in Canada. So I rushed to produce what you see above and I had to do a little different ampersand then you are use to seeing on my little love letters for technical reasons (on their part). I am really happy how they turned out, hopefully Weddingbells will be too. Wait, I'm not done... Panic, also because of the orders that could come from this exposure, can I physically keep up with the possible high demand of orders? Then I decided, hell yeah! This is what I have been working for, I'm on it... heehee...

So, on the agenda today is finishing up the SOURCE letters that should have been in the mail last week, they are for a customer in Amsterdam. I also need to work continue work on 2 little girls letters Sarah and Anjali, an ampersand... plus a 6 inch love letter set and a lowercase love letter set. Will I get all of it done, no. Will I make major steps towards completion? absolutely!

As for tucker reece, I would like to get the birds listed (for Cole :D) and then get photographs of the prints I had made up which consist of All You Need Is Love (above), Follow Your Bliss, You Are My Sunshine all made into 11 x 14 prints. Then I had those as well as some of the Alice in Wonderland designs made into 4 x 6 prints. In addition, I made some new graphics I don't have pictures for in 5 x 7's. I anxiously want to get them listed in the shop. Luckily, my allergies have seemed to subside (fingers crossed) so 'productive' is the key word for the day!

I love having a blog. I do. You wouldn't know it by the few and inconsistent postings but I actually love having this form of creative outlet. My gradual rise in sales have been... challenging for me. Don't get me wrong, completely welcomed but I haven't found my groove yet with being a self-employed artist. So... I find the blog (next to house work) seems to be the first to be neglected. Also, I will have to admit that I have had a hard time coming up with post ideas. So here is my current idea and we will see how it goes...

I am going to start using this as my (for lack of a better ord) diary. I am going to send these random thoughts into the great void in hopes that I will find at least one person that finds insight or commonality in my rantings or unsolicited opinions. For instance, Big Brother! I am the only person I know that watches it. I reluctantly began watching after the forth or so week because of the lack of television to watch and got inevitably hooked. I find myself ranting to Nickolas about it and he just gives me that "stop talking to me about this pointless crap" look and I would love to just have one person say "Yes Jenna, Rachel and Brendon are unbelievably annoying and yet I still can't help rooting for them", or "Can you believe Enzo is pulling that crap with Matt when Matt is the one doing all the work" and "but I don't care because Matt is a douce"... blah blah blah. I still plan to post things I love, things that inspire me and lots of Disneyland (once the darn summer is over and we can go back again in peace and coolness) along with the anything else I have that I feel the need to share...

So yesterday Nick and I decided to rearrange our room. We have been wanting to for a while and finally decided to just do it, now that I am willing to take apart my beautiful headboard. I really loved my headboard but it doesn't work with the change and I love the room more... and by room I mean space! The unfortunate result however was the layer of dust from this dust filled town that caused my allergies to attack me something fierce! I have been down all day because of it, I am completely frustrated because I have so much work to get done and really couldn't afford to take this day off, but as any of you who have allergies know... not much you can do when snot is pouring from your nose. I thought I could add some new items to the shop, add some new little love letters photos to flickr and facebook and maybe create some new graphics. But I have instead spent all my time on this post...heeheehee. I think I shall curl up in bed instead and hope that tomorrow will find me allergy free! I will share some sneak peeks on whats to come in the shop

I am so excited to get my divine twine that I purchased yesterday.
Those of you who has purchased an item from my shop may remember receiving this twine wrapped around their new purchase.

I purchased the red and aqua for my Old Goat Smitten vintage shop packages
as well as, I will be adding them to my tags and banners for my tucker reece shop

and when I saw this Oyster twine I had to have it as well.

The twine lives up to it's name.

For the last 3 years I have spent my birthday at Disneyland. As you might have already realized I am a huge Disney, specifically Disneyland fan. I have loved it since I was a little girl and more than anyone I have ever met until I met Nickolas. His love is as much as mine, if not more, but more importantly we love it for the same reasons. We can sit on a bench in front of the castle for hours or ride Casey Jr. over and over because we love to see Storybookland. We can spend the day looking for hidden mickeys or making sure we have all the newest smash coins. We go because we love Disneyland not because it's an amusement park.

So here are some of the photos I took. It was hot and crowded, so I didn't take as many as I usually do. However, I did get some really great shots of the few I did take...

My beautiful and amazing grandmother turned 80 on Saturday.

We had a big party for her with all the family

(that could be there, every one else in spirit)

My mom made her this adorable giant cupcake.

She powered the top with powdered sugar

Then flourished it with pink frosting flowers

and finally placed mini cupcakes around the base.

I made the Mini Happy Birthday banner to embellish the front.

oh... I forgot to mention, pink is her favorite color.

I came across this print on a tumblr blog and I immediately knew it needed to be in my sisters summer house that she is currently working on and very close to completion. The house is in Greece. Marmari to be exact and the house overlooks the lovely sea. Anyone who knows my sister knows how perfect it is for her and the house, the colors match beautifully.

Here is the print after I framed it for her. I painted an Ikea frame with a milky white (love this white by the way) and beautiful paper I picked up at the craft store which I hand cut to match the circle. It's a little uneven, but I find beauty in it's imperfection.

(Note* That is my Nikki Cat in the background who is named after my sister...

I didn't name her. Long story.)

Now I just need to finish all the other projects I have for her so I can mail it off.

I think she is anxious to get it.

I'll be sure to share all the fun stuff I am doing for her too.

I was checking out one of my usual blogs, lushlee the other day (it's a great blog, you should follow) when I saw this posting called vintage wooden spool vase.

Well it inspired me and I got onto Etsy, where else, and typed in wooden spools and I found this listing Vintage Wooden Spools, Altered Art by Rolling Hills Vintage. What a great shop she has and I was her 500th sale! Isn't that awesome.

I received these lovely little wooden spools when out to the backyard and clipped some flowers that are slowly fading as the heat of summer fades in and created my own vases. I really loved the way it all turned out and I have more coming... another listing of 39 spools! Should be fun to create a larger staging of them, don't you think?

Why I love Acorns

When my nephews were little on one of their yearly visits to the states from Greece, their movie of choice that trip was Ice Age. Phillipos, the youngest was about 2 and he would hand me the DVD and say 'ice... ice' with the sweetest little voice. He would insist on sitting on my lap but would occasionally peek his head around just to make sure I was still there, all the while holding onto my hand. Andreas, who was all of 3 at the time, was obsessed with the acorn. Remember the character Scrat, the saber-toothed squirrel? Scrat was unlucky at his attempt to get ahold of the infamous acorn, which was a hilarious sub-story (bonus) to the movie. I’m pretty sure Andreas was convinced if he had an acorn, it meant he had won something. So anytime he found anything resembling an acorn he would get very excited and carry it everywhere with him. Too funny… Good memories!

Since then because of them I am myself obsessed with acorns. My boys are no longer, but for me acorns remind me of them at that age and of that trip when they decided to take a walk down the alley together, (another story).

I am a sucker for graphic design and candles, this company Skeem is the perfect combination for me. Their candles are silk-screened, then poured with our custom soy/paraffin wax blend to ensure a clean, even burn. Once the wax has burned down, their pillars are reusable as drinking glasses. Love that!

I so love these bags! I really want this one since I am in love with typography, who am I kidding, like I need an excuse. I currently already have three shopper bags, one of which is the cute as hell bag. Then I have the cute as hell shoulder bag (black and white, LOVE) and a matching coin purse... I'm beginning to see a pattern. Anyway, the company is Blue Q which was founded by brothers Mitch and Seth Nash in 1988 and they have a bunch a great brands you might have seen out on your adventures like Dirty Girl and Miso Pretty to name only two of the many funky brands they have. The bags are 95% recycled post consumer material too and at a very affordable price the alphabet shopper above is only $11.99 from their web site. Can't beat that.

the love of rainy days

I was sitting in my studio working when I glanced outside and saw how beautiful it was after it rained, so I grabbed my camera and headed in the backyard and forgot we are surrounded by mountains. If it were only clear like this everyday, then everyone would want to live here.

I love the contrast of this photograph,

the orange-ish hue against the beautiful blue sky.

and the mix of trees, sky, clouds and mountains in this one.

I couldn't believe I could see the mountains that are so far away so clearly.

Disneyland and Rain, two of my favorite things

So, we made plans to go to Disneyland on the 13th and when we got online to get the hotel and it was as expensive as the Disneyland Hotel... so, we decided to postpone to the following week instead, not knowing at that time there was a week long storm due to visit that week as well, and hadn't visited SoCal in quite some time and long over due. The crazy Disneylandians Nick and I are still wanted to go because we love Disneyland that much and love having new experiences there. We set out for our adventure hitting snow for all of a mile between Frasier Park and Gorman (come to find out they closed that stretch of the 5 shortly after we passed through and remained closed through the next day making us have to go around the long way which really wasn't a big deal and totally worth it). It rained the entire drive but luckily never had any traffic, apparently LA people don't like rain and only ventured out out of pure desperation, which was awesome for us.

We arrived to Disneyland and decided we would prefer umbrellas over ponchos. Searching a bit we could not find umbrellas anywhere on Main Street. When we finally gave in and decided a poncho was better than nothing we saw that the register we went to had umbrellas... yay!

Through our search for umbrellas we didn't take the time to notice how empty the park was. We noticed that the trams leaving the park at 1pm were full of people but just thought these were the wimpy "i don't like rain" people. Evidently, there are a LOT of people who don't like rain.

We couldn't get on any of the rides that were outside, like Big Thunder and Matterhorn, not a big deal for us, we go on a monthly basis, all the various carts for snacks and drinks were closed, again not a big deal there were no crowds. We had soaked pants up to our knees because we got tired of trying to avoid the unevitable puddles but it was all worth it! We had no wait for anything... Peter Pan was a walk on ride, and anyone who goes to Disneyland knows that's the longest wait in Fantasyland especially for a 3 minute ride. We walked right up to the register for food and souvenirs, didn't have to stumble over strollers or listen to whiny tired toddlers and got to take pictures with Goofy, Minnie and Mickey all while walking through Mickey's house which had no crowds and no wait time. With everything though, the best part was the pictures I got of an empty park. At times I felt like it was closed and we weren't suppose to be there. Definitely on the top of my all time favorite trips. I'm glad most people hate rain as much as I love it!

Halloween Time at Disneyland

So my favorite tine of year at Disneyland is Halloween Time.

They go all out and each year is better than the last.

and Nightmare Before Christmas taking over the Haunted Mansion is definitely my favorite ride at the park and I wish they would leave it up all year round, I anxiously wait for the end of September so I can finally see Jack again. The ride is so amazingly done!

accidental inspirtation

See what happens when you are drinking blue mountain dew next to all you hard work... you get this really cool looking "oops". Okay, okay, I know that usually accidents don't turn out to your benefit but in this instance it really turned out to mine. It has become new inspiration for a awesome technique that I will be able to experiment with. I guess the lesson learned is when you are in a positive mind set things will turn out for you. Keep this in mind the next time something you didn't plan on happens.
